Former NASCAR Cup Series driver Tighe Scott and his son Jarret Scott were arrested on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The Scotts have been charged with two felonies and misdemeanors for allegedly assaulting police during the chaotic events that unfolded that day.
According to federal charging documents, Tighe Scott, 75, was identified as a former NASCAR driver by a witness who informed FBI agents. Scott is accused of trying to take a shield from an officer, while his son Jarret allegedly had a golf club in his possession.
Tighe Scott competed in 89 Cup Series races over six seasons from 1976 to 1982, with three top-five finishes and 18 top 10s. His best finish was a fourth-place at Rockingham in 1979. Scott finished 13th in the points standings in 1978 and posted seven top 10s that season.
The Scotts are just two of over 1,400 individuals who have been arrested for their alleged roles in the Capitol riot. More than 800 people have already pleaded guilty in connection to the events of that day.
The riot, which saw supporters of former President Donald Trump storming the Capitol in protest of the 2020 election results, resulted in the delay of the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory. Despite the chaos, Biden was ultimately inaugurated two weeks later.
