Exciting update for RSU 9 Pre-K students and their families!

RSU 9 in Franklin County is making big strides in early childhood education with the expansion of its Pre-K program. Starting this fall, all Pre-K programs in the district will be full-day, running from approximately 8:45 to 3:15 p.m. This expansion includes the addition of three new Pre-K classrooms, two at W.G. Mallett School and one at G.D. Cushing School, with the goal of serving more 4-year-olds in the district.

The focus on 4-year-olds is crucial, as studies show that a strong Pre-K program can help young learners build confidence and a solid foundation for future success. RSU 9 is committed to offering high-quality education to all Pre-K eligible students within its ten towns, providing them with opportunities for early academic growth, social interactions, and relationship building.

Funding for this expansion comes from federal grant funds, which are being used to purchase furniture and materials for the new classrooms, as well as to modify school buses for the safe transportation of younger children. Staffing costs for the first year are covered, with partial payments for the following years coming from Balance Forward budget savings and new local funding.

Parents interested in registering their child for the full-time Pre-K programs at G.D. Cushing School and W.G. Mallett School can contact the respective schools to schedule a time to pick up a registration packet. Required documentation includes the child’s birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency, a recent photo, and completed parental questionnaire and medical history forms.
