Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently completed infrastructure enhancements on Streets A11 and A26 in the Al Mizhar area, marking a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to improve its road network. The project, which involved widening the two streets from two to four lanes in both directions over a total distance of 6.8 km, has effectively doubled the road capacity from 1,200 to 2,400 vehicles per hour. This expansion has not only alleviated congestion during peak times but has also set the stage for a more efficient and smoother traffic flow in the area.
According to Hussein Al Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, the upgrades on Streets A11 and A26 included the installation of 90 new lighting poles to enhance safety and visibility for road users. Additionally, the project has added 551 parking slots to cater to the needs of local schools and residents, addressing the growing demands of a community experiencing rapid population growth.
In a bid to promote sustainable and eco-friendly modes of transportation, RTA has also introduced a 5.7 km cycling track as part of the infrastructure enhancements. This move aligns with Dubai’s vision to become a bicycle-friendly city, encouraging residents to embrace alternative modes of mobility while promoting a healthier lifestyle through sports and recreational activities.
One of the key improvements highlighted by Al Banna is the relocation of a traffic light at the intersection of Street 5 and Algeria Street, which has significantly reduced the average waiting time from 2.1 minutes to just 50 seconds. Additionally, the introduction of two new roundabouts on Street 26A aims to improve turning movements and enhance the overall traffic flow for the approximately one million users of the road.
Looking ahead, RTA is committed to a series of ongoing projects aimed at enhancing traffic flow at more than 45 locations across Dubai by 2024. The overarching goal is to bolster the capabilities of the city’s road network to support sustainable growth and maintain its reputation as one of the best in the world.
With these infrastructure enhancements, Dubai is poised to set new standards in urban mobility and transportation efficiency, setting a benchmark for other cities to follow. The completion of the Streets A11 and A26 project underscores RTA’s dedication to improving the quality of life for residents, schools, and businesses in the region, paving the way for a more connected and accessible city for all.
