Expert explains why Fico’s security detail failed, resulting in second bullet hitting bodyguard

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico’s security team made critical errors during an assassination attempt, according to personal security expert Dr J Ervin Kis. Analyzing footage of the incident in Handlova, Kis pointed out that the bodyguards reacted too late and not according to protocol.

In the footage, Fico is seen with his bodyguards, but they are not positioned effectively to protect him. As shots rang out from the right, there was no one guarding Fico’s left side, causing him to fall to the ground without support. Kis highlighted that in such situations, the first shot is difficult to avoid, but the bodyguards should have shielded Fico from subsequent shots.

The expert also noted that the bodyguards failed to consider the possibility of multiple assailants, leaving Fico vulnerable. Despite prior indications of a potential attack, the security team was not adequately prepared or reactive.

Following the incident, former police chief Istvan Hamran criticized the security failure and the chaos during the attack. Fico, who underwent surgery, remains in serious condition.

Kis emphasized the importance of intelligence and proactive security measures in preventing such attacks. He highlighted missed opportunities to identify the assailant before the shooting, underscoring the need for improved security protocols and vigilance in protecting high-profile figures like Prime Minister Fico.
