Experts predict that foreign tourist arrivals to India will exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2024

Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) to India are set to make a remarkable comeback in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, according to experts. The surge in tourism is attributed to India emerging as a preferred destination for travelers amidst escalating conflicts in West Asia and the shift of foreign tourists from China post-Covid-19.

Recent tourism data reveals a staggering 305.4% annual growth in foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, with 9.23 million visitors gracing India’s shores. While this figure falls short of the pre-pandemic peak of 10.93 million in 2019, industry experts are optimistic that 2024 will witness a surpassing of previous records.

Dipak Deva, MD of Travel Corporation of India, expressed confidence in the industry’s growth trajectory, predicting double-digit expansion over the next few years. The influx of tourists is expected to rise further with Indian airlines ordering over 1000 aircraft, enhancing accessibility and connectivity to the country’s diverse tourist destinations.

Deva highlighted Air India’s pivotal role in driving inbound tourism growth, following a significant aircraft acquisition deal. With China’s waning appeal as a tourist destination, India stands to benefit from the shifting preferences of global travelers.

By 2028, Foreign Tourist Arrivals are projected to reach 30.5 million, with the tourism and hospitality industry expected to generate revenue exceeding USD 59 billion. The sector’s resilience and promising outlook signal a bright future for India’s tourism landscape.
