Birdwatching Adventure Reveals Hidden Avian Kingdom in Parksville Qualicum Beach

I recently had the opportunity to embark on a birdwatching adventure that opened my eyes to the diverse and abundant bird species that call Parksville Qualicum Beach home. Led by birdwatching expert Liam Ragan of BC Nature, our sea survey took us on a cruise around nearby islands to observe the activities of Brant geese and other coastal birds that are not easily seen from shore.

Equipped with binoculars and cameras, our group, which included members of the Arrowsmith Naturalists and the VIU Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute, scanned the waters for any signs of avian life. Despite my initial struggles to spot the birds amidst the vast ocean expanse, I was amazed by the expertise of Ragan and his ability to identify species by color and shape alone.

Throughout the trip, we spotted a variety of bird species, including the elusive western grebe and endangered marbled murrelet. Ragan emphasized the importance of protecting these migrating birds and their habitats to ensure their continued existence.

As we sailed back to shore, Ragan reflected on our successful survey, noting that we had observed 10 species on his checklist and 39 other types of birds. He highlighted the significance of Parksville Qualicum Beach as a globally recognized important bird and biodiversity area, emphasizing the need to preserve these habitats for future generations.

The experience not only deepened my appreciation for the avian kingdom but also reminded me to take the time to observe and appreciate the beauty of nature that surrounds us. Birdwatching may seem like a simple pastime, but it has the power to connect us to the natural world in ways we never imagined. As I reflect on my birdwatching adventure, I am grateful for the opportunity to witness the wonders of the avian world and the importance of preserving it for generations to come.
