Exploring the UAE’s Most Extreme Weather Events Following Record Rainfall and Floods

Record rainfall pummelled the UAE and Oman during last week’s storm, breaking historic weather records and causing widespread flooding and destruction. The National Centre of Meteorology reported that Dubai received 142mm of rain, while parts of Al Ain saw a staggering 254.8mm, the highest since records began in 1949.

Looking back at weather data from the mid-1930s, it was revealed that December 1944 received 173.5mm of rain, compared to the usual average of 27.9mm for the month. Between 1934 and 1964, the average yearly rainfall for the seven emirates was 106.9mm, much lower than the recent storm.

One event that stands out is the great storm of April 8, 1957, when 97.3mm of rain fell on Sharjah alone, with a total of 340.4mm recorded for the year. This storm caused significant damage and loss of life, highlighting the improvements in warning systems and infrastructure since then.

The UAE has experienced extreme weather events in the past, from droughts to floods, with some years receiving record-breaking rainfall. The impact of climate change means that these extreme weather events are likely to become more frequent and severe in the future.
