The world’s tiniest sports car, the 1965 Peel Trident, has captured the attention of car enthusiasts with its unique design and minuscule size. Measuring less than two meters long, the Trident features a bubble windscreen that provides the driver with a 360-degree view of the road. With just three wheels and seating for two passengers, the car is a tight fit, with each seat measuring just 31 inches.
Despite its diminutive dimensions, the Peel Trident has garnered a dedicated fan base over the years. Developed in 1963 as a budget-friendly mode of transportation, only 45 of these unique cars were ever produced. The Trident’s quirky design and small frame have made it a sought-after collector’s item for many motor enthusiasts.
Drive a Classic, a car expert and enthusiast on YouTube, recently showcased the Peel Trident, highlighting its innovative Perspex dome made of fiberglass that replaces a traditional windshield. This feature eliminates blind spots and provides unparalleled visibility for the driver. However, getting in and out of the car requires lifting the clear dome and stepping into the narrow seats from above.
Despite its charming design, the Peel Trident sacrifices safety features for its compact size. With a 49cc engine producing just 4.2 horsepower, the car can reach a top speed of 28mph. The lack of seatbelts, airbags, and padded seats means that drivers must handle the vehicle with care.
The Peel Trident is not the only microcar from the company, with the P50 being another iconic model. Featured on Top Gear, the P50 was famously described as a “tiny death trap” due to its even smaller size and lack of safety features. Despite its limitations, the Peel Trident remains a conversation starter and a prized possession for collectors of unique automobiles.
