Expulsion of Colorado politics reporter from Republican gathering sparks controversy

The recent expulsion of Colorado Sun reporter Sandra Fish from a Republican gathering has sparked outrage among politicians and news outlets, with many coming to her defense and condemning the actions of the state party chairman.

Fish, a seasoned politics reporter with decades of experience, was kicked out of the assembly in Pueblo on Saturday by Party Chairman Dave Williams, who accused her of being a “fake journalist” and the Colorado Sun of being biased. Despite wearing press credentials and a nametag, Fish was asked to leave by security and escorted out by a sheriff’s deputy.

The controversy has even influenced the Republican primary race, with the state party announcing its endorsement of U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert over one of her opponents, Deborah Flora, partly due to Flora’s defense of Fish. Flora called the expulsion a violation of the First Amendment, sparking a heated exchange on social media.

Journalists, elected officials, and former party leaders have rallied behind Fish, praising her integrity and professionalism. Republican state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer described Fish as fair, honest, and respected, while former party chair Kristi Burton Brown called the expulsion a dangerous move by the current GOP.

The incident has raised concerns about press freedom and transparency within the party, with Fish’s editor, Larry Ryckman, emphasizing the importance of fairness and accuracy in journalism.
