F1 News: McLaren Makes Surprising Technical Change Before Japanese Grand Prix with Departure of David Sanchez

McLaren has made a surprising announcement regarding a technical restructure ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. The team recognized a “misalignment” and as a result, David Sanchez, who joined McLaren from Ferrari earlier this year as the technical director for car concept and performance, has left the team.

In response to Sanchez’s departure, McLaren has appointed Rob Marshall, who previously worked at Red Bull, as the chief designer, and Neil Houldey as the technical director for engineering. Additionally, team principal Andrea Stella will temporarily take over Sanchez’s role.

Stella stated, “This further step in the evolution of the structure of the technical department and of the working model within the team signify our commitment to constantly enhancing our technical capabilities and workflows for greater efficiency and effectiveness.”

Sanchez expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with McLaren but acknowledged that the role did not align with his expectations. Despite his short tenure, Sanchez wished the team continued success in their journey to the front of the grid.

McLaren currently sits third in the constructors’ championship behind Red Bull and Ferrari, with Lando Norris achieving a podium finish in the last race in Melbourne. The team continues to push for improvements, particularly in slow-speed corners.

The Japanese Grand Prix, set to air live on Sky Sports F1, will be a crucial event for McLaren as they strive to make further advancements in their performance on the track.
