Failed coup attempt thwarted in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Government forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) successfully thwarted an attempted coup in Kinshasa, leading to the arrest of several perpetrators, including foreigners. The incident, which resulted in three casualties following a shootout, has raised tensions in the region as authorities work to restore order and investigate those involved.

According to Congolese army spokesperson Brigadier General Sylvain Ekenge, the coup attempt involved both foreigners and Congolese individuals, all of whom have been neutralized by the security forces. Ekenge reassured the population that the situation is under control and urged them to continue their daily activities without fear.

The attempted coup was preceded by a video posted on Facebook by opposition leader Christian Malanga, who declared himself the president of the “New Zaïre government in exile” and threatened the current president, Felix Tshisekedi. Clashes also erupted near the presidential palace involving guards of federal legislator Vital Kamerhe, but they were able to repel the attackers.

President Tshisekedi, who was re-elected in a disputed election last December, has yet to address the public regarding the recent events. However, he previously warned of potential dissolution of the National Assembly if internal party conflicts persist.

The United States Embassy in Congo issued a security alert following the incident, advising caution due to reports of gunfire. The successful prevention of the coup marks a significant victory for the government in maintaining stability amidst political unrest and opposition threats in the country.
