Gibson-City-Melvin-Sibley’s baseball team made history on Monday afternoon by clinching their first-ever state tournament appearance with a 3-0 shutout victory against Annawan/Wethersfield in a Class 1A game at Jack Horenberger Field.
The Falcons, who had never won a super-sectional plaque before, relied on the stellar pitching performance of Elliott, who threw seven complete innings of five-hit, six-strikeout ball. The team’s defense also played a crucial role in the victory, making multiple key plays to help secure the win.
With a sea of red-clad fans cheering them on, the Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the third inning to take control of the game. Despite being outhit by the Titans, the Falcons’ strong defensive plays, including a clutch catch by David Hull and a bases-loaded putout by Zeb Greer, kept their opponents at bay.
The historic victory on Monday sets up a state semifinal game with Altamont this weekend, with the opportunity to advance to the state championship game. The Falcons, buoyed by their recent success in other sports, are eager to continue their winning streak and bring home the program’s first-ever state trophy.
As the team prepares for the upcoming games, the players and fans alike are filled with excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. With their eyes set on the ultimate prize, the Falcons are ready to make even more history on the baseball field.
