The family of Erin Yoxall, a 29-year-old woman from Scotland who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run in Toronto two years ago, is seeking justice as the sentencing of the driver responsible looms.
Ertug Direk, 44, with a history of criminal offenses, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of the accident. The incident took place in the early morning hours of April 14, 2022, in the Spadina Avenue and King Street West area.
Direk was driving at a speed of 107 km/h in a 40 km/h zone when he struck Yoxall, who was crossing the road without a crosswalk. Yoxall suffered a serious brain injury and succumbed to her injuries two days later at St. Michael’s Hospital.
After the collision, Direk fled the scene but later turned himself in to the police. In court, Yoxall’s parents, Roseanne and Anthony, expressed their grief and loss, emphasizing the impact of their daughter’s vibrant life being extinguished.
While the prosecutor and defense have recommended a 4.5-year sentence for Direk, Yoxall’s family believes that a longer sentence is warranted given his extensive criminal history. They fear that upon release, Direk may continue his criminal behavior.
As the sentencing date approaches, the family hopes that justice will be served for Erin Yoxall, whose life was cut short in a senseless act of recklessness.
