Legendary American songwriter Mike Stoller is teaming up with talented young Calgarians to create the songs for the Theatre Calgary production of “Beaches – The Musical.” Stoller, known for hits like “Hound Dog” and “Stand By Me,” is providing the tunes for the international premiere of the musical, based on the popular book and movie.
Calgary actor/singer/dancers Katie McMillan, 24, and Jillian Hubler-McManus, 18, are thrilled to be working alongside Stoller and other show business veterans in the Theatre Calgary rehearsal hall. McMillan expressed, “It’s an amazing opportunity to watch him work. He’s a musical genius.” McManus added, “I never could’ve dreamed of this possibility – it’s so cool! Mike is one of the greats and he’s written so many songs that I have on my playlist.”
The cast and crew also include Broadway veterans like Kelli Barrett and Jessica Vosk, who are performing in the lead roles. Vosk shared, “Getting to work with younger actors, it makes me remember what it was like to be a kid and love this so much.” Barrett praised the young Calgary performers, saying, “They’re working so hard and they’re really talented. We’re blown away by the level of talent here.”
Stoller himself has been impressed by the Calgarians involved in the show, calling them “marvelous” and “sensational actors and dancers.” The collaboration between the Calgary talent and the seasoned professionals is helping the young performers develop their skills.
The Theatre Calgary production of “Beaches – The Musical” is set to run from May 18 to June 16 in the Max Bell Theatre at Arts Commons, with Stoller expressing hopes for the show to eventually make its way to Broadway.
