Famous handbag designer sentenced to 18 months in jail for smuggling crocodile purses

Celebrity handbag designer Nancy Gonzalez has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for smuggling crocodile handbags from her native Colombia. The leading fashion designer, known for her accessories worn by A-list celebrities like Britney Spears and the cast of “Sex and the City,” pleaded guilty in Miami federal court to charges of violating U.S. wildlife laws.

Gonzalez was arrested in 2022 in Cali, Colombia, and extradited to the U.S. for running a conspiracy that involved recruiting couriers to transport her handbags on commercial flights to high-end showrooms and fashion events in New York. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Watts-Fitzgerald compared Gonzalez’s behavior to that of drug traffickers, stating that it was all driven by money.

Despite her lawyers seeking leniency and describing her as a determined single mother who built a successful fashion empire, Gonzalez was sentenced to prison. The 71-year-old designer expressed regret for not complying with U.S. laws and emphasized her desire to reunite with her 103-year-old mother.

Prosecutors highlighted Gonzalez’s lavish lifestyle and contrasted it with the couriers she recruited to smuggle her merchandise. The designer’s company declared bankruptcy after her arrest, and she must surrender on June 6 to begin her sentence.

While Gonzalez’s work was praised by celebrities and featured in prestigious events, her illegal activities have tarnished her reputation. The judge considered her nearly 14 months in a Colombian prison awaiting extradition when handing down the sentence.
