Artificial Intelligence and the ongoing digital revolution are set to transform the world and its agrifood systems, according to the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Qu Dongyu. Speaking at the Business Federations of the G7 (B7) meeting in Rome, Qu emphasized the urgent need for these transformations to benefit everyone and address global challenges.
Qu highlighted that Artificial Intelligence is not just a technological shift but is driving a fundamental economic and social transformation at a broad level. FAO recognizes the power of AI to bring potential benefits to a wide range of populations, improve efficiency, and promote sustainability.
“Digital agriculture can revolutionize how we produce, distribute, and consume food,” Qu stated, pointing out the potential benefits for farmers and stakeholders in agrifood systems. These benefits include improved pricing data, reduced food loss and waste, enhanced food safety, and increased adoption of better seeds, fertilizer, and sustainable practices.
The event, held at the Rome headquarters of Italy’s main business association, Confindustria, was attended by Italy’s deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, and CEOs from international private companies. The FAO Director-General emphasized the importance of cross-border global cooperation and collaboration with partners to maximize the positive impact of innovations.
Qu also stressed the need for increased ambition for climate action in the private sector and accountability towards supply chains and communities. Addressing energy consumption in agrifood systems is crucial for decarbonization by 2050, he added.
Overall, FAO is advocating for a robust approach with targeted strategies and actions implemented in synergy with ethical principles to drive positive change in the agrifood sector.
