Far-right Dutch party set to form coalition government

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Geert Wilders’ far-right party is on the brink of forming a coalition government in the Netherlands, marking a significant shift to the right in the country. The anti-Islam politician, who secured a historic win in the November elections, is set to join forces with the conservative liberal VVD, the centre-right New Social Contract (NSC), and the populist Farmer-Citizen Movement.

Despite his electoral success, Wilders has faced challenges in forming a government, with three other parties insisting that he stay out of the cabinet if they were to collaborate with his Freedom party (PVV). However, after intense negotiations, a breakthrough seems imminent, with a formal announcement expected before midnight on Wednesday.

The new government’s agenda is expected to focus on curbing immigration, increasing taxes on the wealthy and businesses to fund welfare programs for the elderly. Wilders, known for his fiery rhetoric, has toned down some of his more radical policies, such as a ban on the Koran and mosques, in a bid to appease his coalition partners.

Despite facing death threats and living under constant police protection, Wilders remains determined to lead the country and “put the Dutch on top.” As the clock ticks towards the deadline for forming a government, all eyes are on the Netherlands to see how this rightward shift will impact the country’s future.
