Laura Fennell, a staff member at Marshall Middle School, was recently honored with the Friend of Education award by the Marshall Education Association. Fennell, who works in the Student Services office, was recognized for her dedication and support of the students at the school.

Fennell, who has been in Marshall since 2008, was surprised by the recognition, especially since she has only been at MMS for two years. She previously managed Shopko Optical in Marshall but found the Student Services position to be a better fit for her and her family.

In her role, Fennell helps students with a variety of issues, from class schedules to attendance, and even provides a listening ear for those who may be having a tough day. MEA members praised Fennell for her work ethic and supportive nature towards both students and staff at MMS.

Fennell expressed her gratitude for the positive experiences she has had at MMS, from the diverse tasks she handles to the relationships she has built with the students. She mentioned that she will miss the eighth graders who will be moving on but looks forward to continuing to be a positive presence in the office for those who need support.

Fennell emphasized the importance of having a friendly face for students and staff to turn to, as you never know what someone may be going through. She believes that being approachable and supportive is crucial in creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels comfortable seeking help.
