FIFA selects Brazil as host for 2027 Women’s World Cup, marking historic first for South America

Brazil has been chosen to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, marking a historic first for South America. The decision was announced at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, May 17, 2024.

The Brazilian bid team was ecstatic as the result was revealed, hugging and celebrating on the podium. The victory was not only seen as a win for women’s soccer but also for the country and the entire South American region.

Brazil’s soccer federation president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, expressed the significance of the win, especially in the face of recent natural disasters that have affected the country. He highlighted the importance of the Women’s World Cup in strengthening Brazil after facing challenges like climate change-induced flooding.

This decision marked the first time that all of FIFA’s member associations had the opportunity to vote on the host of the women’s tournament. Previously, the decision was made by the FIFA Council.

With 207 out of 211 eligible members participating in the electronic ballot, Brazil emerged as the clear favorite after ranking higher in an evaluation report by a FIFA-appointed panel.

The next World Cup host votes, for the 2030 and 2034 tournaments, are set to take place on December 11 in an online congress. Brazil’s victory in hosting the 2027 Women’s World Cup has set the stage for more exciting developments in the world of soccer.
