Reading Time: < 1 minute

Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett recently led a delegation of nearly 50 mayors to Washington, D.C., to advocate for solutions to the housing and homelessness crisis affecting U.S. cities. The group met with top officials, including Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Denis McDonough, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, to push for changes to voucher income qualifications for veterans and increased funding for housing choice vouchers.

During their two-day trip, Mayor Daggett and her team also lobbied for Flagstaff’s FY25 appropriations requests, which include projects such as improvements to the Amtrak station platform, airport terminal expansion, and La Plaza Vieja infrastructure improvements. They also discussed ongoing support for projects like the Rio de Flag flood control project and wildfire risk reduction.

In meetings with members of Congress, including Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Congressman Ruben Gallego, the delegation emphasized the importance of continued federal support for Flagstaff’s infrastructure and housing initiatives. They also urged for the renewal of transportation funding in the Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act.

Overall, Mayor Daggett’s advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C., aimed to secure funding for critical projects that will enhance the quality of life for Flagstaff residents and address pressing issues facing the community. The delegation’s lobbying packet, which provides more details on their discussions and requests, can be accessed through the City Council’s website.
