Finland to Propose Law Allowing Border Agents to Block Asylum Seekers from Russia

In a bold move, Finland is set to propose a new law that would allow border agents to block asylum seekers trying to enter from Russia. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced the decision on Sunday, citing the need to prevent a growing number of arrivals from countries like Syria and Somalia.

The proposed law comes after Finland shut its border with Russia last year, accusing Moscow of weaponizing migration against the European Union. Despite acknowledging that turning migrants back to Russia without processing their asylum applications would breach international human rights commitments, the government believes the measure is necessary and will be temporary and limited.

The draft law, which will be presented to parliament next week, requires a five-sixths majority to pass due to its constitutional nature. While the outcome is uncertain, Finnish leaders are determined to prevent a potential influx of migrants as warmer weather approaches.

With fewer than 40 migrants crossing the border from Russia this year, Finland remains vigilant, anticipating a resurgence in arrivals. The bill would allow border authorities to turn back asylum seekers, with or without using force, excluding children and disabled individuals whose asylum applications would still be accepted.

Opposition parties, including the Social Democrats, have expressed reservations about the proposed law, emphasizing the importance of discussing the final version in parliament. Finland’s ombudsman for non-discrimination, Kristina Stenman, warned against refusing asylum applications at the border, calling it alarming.

As tensions between Finland and Russia persist, the proposed law reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding its borders and upholding international obligations.
