A fire has broken out at one of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings, the Old Stock Exchange, causing panic and chaos in the city. Emergency crews were seen rushing to the scene as thick smoke billowed into the sky, engulfing the iconic spire of the historic building, which eventually collapsed into the roof.
Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries, but images circulating on social media showed artwork being removed from the building as a precaution. The Old Stock Exchange, situated next to the Danish parliament, was undergoing renovation when the fire broke out. The building, known for its 56m (184ft) spire shaped by the intertwined tails of four dragons, was a symbol of Danish cultural heritage.
Denmark’s Minister for Culture, Jakob Engel-Schmidt, expressed his dismay on Twitter, calling the fire a tragic loss of 400 years of Danish cultural heritage. The Chamber of Commerce also lamented the destruction of the historic building, also known as Borsen, urging people to avoid driving in the inner part of the city.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, Copenhagen police have asked the public to stay clear of the area. This breaking news story is still developing, and more details will be provided as they become available. Stay tuned for updates on this devastating incident.
