First Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Named by NASA

Reading Time: < 1 minute

NASA has appointed David Salvagnini as the agency’s new chief artificial intelligence (AI) officer, expanding his current role as chief data officer. Salvagnini, who joined NASA in June 2023 after a long career in technology leadership in the intelligence community, will now lead the agency’s efforts to guide the responsible use of AI in space and on Earth.

With a background in enterprise-level IT research and development, engineering, and operations, Salvagnini is well-equipped to align NASA’s strategic vision for AI usage and champion innovation in the field. His appointment comes in line with President Biden’s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence.

NASA has been using AI tools for decades to support missions, analyze data, and develop autonomous systems for spacecraft and aircraft. Salvagnini’s role will involve collaborating with government agencies, academic institutions, industry partners, and experts to ensure NASA remains at the forefront of AI technology.

Prior to Salvagnini’s appointment, Chief Scientist Kate Calvin served as NASA’s acting responsible AI official. The agency continues to explore the potential of AI in various aspects of its missions, from analyzing Earth science imagery to scheduling communications with the Perseverance Mars rover.

As NASA looks to leverage emerging AI technology for its goals and missions, Salvagnini’s leadership will be crucial in advancing the agency’s capabilities in this rapidly evolving field.
