Romania Opens First Crowd-Funded Hospital

In a heartwarming display of community support, Romania has opened its first crowd-funded children’s cancer hospital. The bright and attractive building, financed exclusively through donations, stands out as a beacon of hope in a country with the lowest public spending on health in the EU.

Led by the Give Life Association, the fundraising effort saw contributions from 350,000 individuals and nearly 8,000 companies. The total raised, including 20 million euros from text messages, enabled the construction of a state-of-the-art facility that includes oncology, haemato-oncology, surgery, intensive care, and neurosurgery units.

The hospital, equipped with playrooms, a cinema, a radio studio, and even an observatory on the roof, aims to provide a comfortable and modern environment for children battling cancer. The Give Life organization donated the entire facility to the state, emphasizing their commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure throughout the country.

The new hospital is a stark contrast to the dilapidated and overcrowded facilities that have plagued Romania’s healthcare system. With a focus on increasing the survival rate of children with cancer and providing access to advanced treatments, the founders of Give Life are already planning to raise funds for additional buildings and transform the grounds into a medical campus.
