First-ever footage captures baby penguins diving off 50-foot cliff for their inaugural swim

In a heartwarming display of bravery, scores of baby penguins were captured on camera taking their first-ever swim by diving off a massive 50-foot cliff in the icy Antarctic waters. The incredible footage, shot by award-winning National Geographic cinematographer Bertie Gregory, showcases the fearless behavior of these flightless birds.

Gregory spent two frigid months tracking a 10,000-strong flock of Emperor penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula when he stumbled upon the chicks’ unprecedented cliff-jumping ritual. The event, known as fledging, marks the moment when the young penguins take their inaugural plunge into the Southern Ocean.

The footage shows a long line of adorable baby penguins waddling towards the edge of the daunting precipice, hesitating before one brave chick takes the leap. With a splash, the chick lands in the water and begins swimming, inspiring other chicks to follow suit.

Despite the treacherous 50-foot drop and chunks of ice floating in the water below, the penguin chicks emerge unscathed and excitedly paddle in the sea for the first time in their lives. Gregory described the experience as “amazing,” noting that the chicks were not just surviving but thriving in their newfound aquatic environment.

This remarkable footage, a first-time glimpse of penguin chicks cliff-jumping, will be featured in National Geographic’s upcoming documentary “Secrets of the Penguins,” set to premiere on Earth Day 2025.
