First High-Level Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence to be Held Between China and US Envoys

High-level envoys from the United States and China are set to meet in Geneva on Tuesday for talks about artificial intelligence, including the risks of the fast-evolving technology and ways to set shared standards to manage it.

The meeting, which is the first under an inter-governmental dialogue on AI agreed during a meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco in November, is seen as a crucial step in addressing the national security and economic growth implications of AI for both countries.

Both the U.S. and China view AI as essential for their future development, with the Biden administration focusing on the development of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI. The U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, highlighted the importance of creating voluntary commitments with leading companies in the sector and implementing safety tests for AI products.

The U.S. government is also concerned about the potential national security risks posed by China’s advancements in AI technology, and sees the need for global governance on the issue.

China’s official Xinhua news agency reported that the talks will cover technological risks of AI and global governance issues. The U.S. team is being led by presidential adviser Tarun Chhabra and State Department’s Seth Center.
