Fitness Industry Makes Strong Presence at Capitol Hill Advocacy Event

More than 100 industry leaders made their voices heard on Capitol Hill this week, urging members of Congress to pass legislation including the Personal Health Investment (PHIT) Act. The Health & Fitness Association’s 2024 Fly-In and Advocacy Summit saw a record turnout of 120 industry leaders advocating for the bill, which would allow Americans to use pre-tax dollars on gym memberships, fitness equipment, and youth sports.

The event marked the first major gathering under the Health & Fitness Association’s new name, signaling a renewed focus on making the industry’s mission more easily understood by lawmakers and the public. Industry leaders met with 130 members of Congress or their staff to push for support of the PHIT Act and other beneficial legislation.

In addition to advocating for the bill, attendees highlighted the significant economic impact of private health clubs and studios on the American economy, presenting key data points to lawmakers. They also emphasized the importance of health and fitness activities in addressing the youth mental health crisis in the country.

Sponsored by industry leaders such as ABC Fitness, Matrix Fitness, and Technogym, the event showcased a united front in the fight for recognition and support from legislators. Looking ahead, the Health & Fitness Association plans to continue its advocacy efforts with another Fly-In and Advocacy Summit scheduled for May 2025.

With a growing appetite for legislative issues and a broader reach under its new name, the health and fitness industry is making its presence known in Washington and beyond.
