Five individuals facing charges for allegedly vandalizing property in Katamanso court

Five individuals have found themselves in hot water after appearing in an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly causing extensive damage to property on six acres of land in Katamanso, Greater Accra. The accused are facing charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, causing unlawful damage, and trespassing.

The accused, including an engineer, a secretary, a businessman, and a driver, allegedly destroyed an unfinished three-bedroom house, a two-bedroom house, five thousand cement blocks, a block factory, a trio of single rooms, and fence walls, among other things. The court, presided over by Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah, granted them bail of GH¢100,000 each, with two sureties, to appear on May 8, 2024, for their pleas to be heard.

According to Chief Superintendent of Police Augustine Yirenkyi, the complainants in the case are individuals from various professions, including a medical doctor, a military officer, a businessman, a traditional ruler, a nurse, and another businessman. The complainants had acquired the land in 2020 and had built uncompleted houses and fence walls on the property.

The prosecution revealed that the accused had illegally entered the land with bulldozers and police patrol cars, directing the bulldozer drivers to demolish the buildings and fence walls without any court order. Despite police advice to seek redress in court, the accused proceeded with the demolition, leading to their arrest and further investigation.

Efforts are now underway to arrest other possible accomplices in the case. The accused individuals will have to face the consequences of their actions as the legal process unfolds.
