Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a stunning upset, the Flagler College Saints claimed their first-ever PBC men’s tennis tournament title by defeating the six-time defending champions, the Columbus State Cougars, with a score of 4-2. The match, held in Columbus, was filled with intense competition and thrilling moments that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Flagler got off to a strong start by winning the doubles point, with Simon Malis and Philipp Lemken securing a crucial victory at the first spot. Despite Columbus State fighting back and winning at third doubles, Flagler managed to clinch the point with a win at second doubles, setting the stage for an exciting singles showdown.

Columbus State took an early lead in singles play, but Flagler quickly responded with wins at fourth and fifth singles. The match of the day came at second singles, where Flagler’s Baptiste Mercier battled against Columbus State’s Thomas Cardona in a grueling three-set match that lasted over two hours. Mercier ultimately emerged victorious, securing the decisive point for Flagler and earning the title of tournament singles MVP.

With this victory, Flagler not only claimed the Peach Belt’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament but also solidified their position as one of the top regional hosts. Columbus State, on the other hand, will have to wait for the NCAA tournament selections to see if they will also secure a spot in the regional competition. The anticipation is high as tennis fans eagerly await the announcement on May 6.
