Flagstaff, AZ – The innovative concept of using satellites and firefighting drones to detect and extinguish wildfires is gaining traction, with local team Snuffed taking the lead in pitch competitions. The 22-member team, consisting of engineers, astronomers, and firefighters, recently won first place and $15,000 in the city’s competition, Innovate Waste: The Carbon Neutrality and Water Conservation Challenge.

Flagstaff Fire Captain Mike Felts, a member of Snuffed, shared his personal experience with the Pipeline Fire in 2022 to emphasize the importance of early wildfire detection. The team’s success in the global XPRIZE Wildfire competition has propelled them to the semifinals, showcasing their potential to revolutionize wildfire prevention.

In a separate competition, entrepreneur Jesslynn Armstrong emerged victorious in Moonshot’s 5th Annual Rural AZ Pitch Flagstaff event with her Tensegrity Medical concept. The medical device company aims to develop light technology for medical emergencies and clinical practice, with Armstrong winning $2,000 and the opportunity to compete in the state pitch contest.

The city and Moonshot collaborated to host the competitions, bringing together Flagstaff’s startup community and local stakeholders. Moonshot President and CEO Scott Hathcock praised the city’s innovative spirit and commitment to sustainability and economic development, highlighting the creativity and dedication of participants and attendees.

Overall, the competitions showcased the diverse talent and entrepreneurial drive within Flagstaff, setting the stage for continued innovation and growth in the region.
