Flagstaff’s Green Business of the Year Award Presented to GC Railway

The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce has awarded Grand Canyon Railway the prestigious title of Green Business of the Year. This recognition highlights the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and preserving the natural beauty of the region.

Julie Pastrick, the president and CEO of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, praised the efforts of local businesses and non-profits in promoting sustainability. She emphasized the importance of environmental awareness and commended Grand Canyon Railway for its dedication to preserving the environment.

One of the key initiatives that set Grand Canyon Railway apart is the use of a unique fuel mixture in its steam locomotive. By combining recycled vegetable oil with diesel fuel, the locomotive operates 40% to 50% cleaner than traditional diesel engines. The exhaust of the 1930 locomotive even emits a pleasant aroma of French fries, earning it the nickname French Fry Express.

Looking ahead, Grand Canyon Railway is exploring the possibility of converting a diesel-electric locomotive to a regenerative battery locomotive. This innovative technology would allow the locomotive to recharge its batteries while traveling downhill, reducing energy consumption and emissions.

The commitment to sustainability extends beyond the railway itself, with Xanterra Travel Collection, the company that owns and operates Grand Canyon Railway, implementing various eco-friendly practices. From collecting food waste to feed mules at the Grand Canyon mule barn to producing t-shirts from recycled plastic bottles, Xanterra is dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint.

As Earth Day approaches on April 22, the recognition of Grand Canyon Railway as the Green Business of the Year serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship in preserving the natural wonders of the region.
