The flame for the Paris Olympics was officially lit at the ancient site of Olympia in Greece, marking the beginning of a symbolic journey that will culminate in the opening of the games in Paris. Despite cloudy skies hindering the traditional lighting method using the sun’s rays, a backup flame was used to ignite the torch.

The flame will now be carried through a 3,100-mile route in Greece by a relay of torchbearers, including Greek rower Stefanos Douskos and French swimmer Laure Manaudou. The handover to Paris Games organizers will take place in Athens on April 26.

IOC President Thomas Bach emphasized the significance of the flame lighting, calling it a combination of honoring the past and having faith in the future. He highlighted the unifying and hopeful nature of the Olympics, especially in times of conflict and negativity.
