The Kingsford varsity softball team faced off against the Houghton Gremlins in a doubleheader at Lodal Park on Friday, battling through challenging weather conditions. Despite the intermittent snowflakes and chilling winds, the Flivvers struggled to contain the Gremlins’ offense and ultimately lost both games.

In the first game, Houghton took an early lead by scoring eight runs in the top of the first inning. They continued to add to their lead, ultimately securing a 14-4 victory. Kingsford showed some signs of life on offense, with players like Jenna Viau and Eden Janousek contributing to the scoring effort.

The second game followed a similar pattern, with the Gremlins maintaining control and ultimately winning 15-2. The Flivvers made some attempts to rally, but Houghton’s strong performance proved too much to overcome.

Despite the losses, there were standout performances from players like Anna Bortolini and Addy Weber on the Kingsford team. The Flivvers will look to bounce back in their next game against Negaunee at Lodal Park.

In other softball action, the Norway Knights faced tough competition against the Bonduel Bears in a doubleheader, falling 11-0 and 6-0 in the two games. The Knights struggled to generate offense, with players like Emma Dube and Kara Stanchina putting in solid efforts despite the losses.

Meanwhile, the North Dickinson Nordics had a strong showing against the Munising Mustangs, winning both games of their doubleheader with scores of 17-2 and 15-5. Standout performances from players like Lauren Jungwirth and Dalaney Steinbrecher helped secure the victories for the Nordics.

Overall, it was a day of highs and lows for the local softball teams, with some tough losses but also some impressive performances to build on in future games.
