The Florence varsity baseball team had a memorable day at Red Johnson Field in Florence, Wis., as they honored Leigh Johnson with a plaque unveiling before their game against Wausaukee. The Bobcats went on to secure a 9-5 nonconference victory, improving their season record to 10-5 while the Rangers fell to 10-10.

Wausaukee started strong, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning with some timely hits and a Bobcats’ error. However, Florence fought back in the fourth inning, tying the game at three apiece.

The game remained close until the bottom of the sixth inning when Florence exploded for six runs to take a commanding lead. Key hits from William Kelley, Matthew Smith, and Trent McLain propelled the Bobcats to victory.

Kelley also shined on the mound, striking out four batters in 4.1 innings of work, while McLain closed out the game and earned the win.

Offensively, Smith led the way with three RBIs and a double, while Kelley contributed with a double and an RBI. McLain, Logan Koski, and Joey Holmstrom also drove in runs for the Bobcats.

With the regular season coming to a close, Florence now looks ahead to postseason play with a bye in the opening round of Regionals. Their playoff journey will begin on Tuesday, May 28.

Next up for the Bobcats is a single game against Kingsford at Lodal Park on Friday before they shift their focus to the playoffs.
