Focus on Global Conflict and Climate Finance Ahead of COP29 in Baku | Latest News from India

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is gearing up to host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in November, and it may end up playing a crucial role in shaping global discussions on two critical issues – global conflict and climate finance.

Situated between Russia and Iran, Azerbaijan is currently working towards a peace deal with Armenia, showcasing its unique geographical position and status as a petro-state in transition. Top diplomat and Foreign Policy Advisor to the President of Azerbaijan, Hikmet Hajiyev, believes that Azerbaijan can use its position to achieve an ambitious climate deal.

Hajiyev envisions COP29 as a “Truce COP,” where negotiations focus on collaboration rather than blame. He emphasizes the importance of addressing the climate crisis, highlighting the need for unity despite geopolitical differences. Azerbaijan is drawing inspiration from the Non-Aligned Movement philosophy to develop its strategy, aiming to find a third way that promotes cooperation and peace.

As preparations for COP29 continue, the focus is on key deliverables such as the New Collective Quantified Goal and the operationalization of the Loss and Damage fund. However, complications are arising at the Bonn climate change conference, with disagreements between rich and developing countries on climate finance contributions.

Despite the challenges, Azerbaijan is committed to driving green transition and energy diversification. The country recently launched major solar and wind projects, signaling its commitment to sustainability. With COP29 on the horizon, Baku is poised to lead discussions on global conflict resolution and climate finance, setting the tone for a more collaborative and sustainable future.
