The Foreign Office has issued a warning to UK tourists traveling to Turkey about strict rules regarding certain items that can be taken in or out of the country. The updated travel advice, released on Friday, May 17, includes information on areas where travel is advised against, visa requirements, and customs regulations.

While most of Turkey is considered safe for travel, there are specific areas that the Foreign Office advises against visiting, such as regions within 10km of the Syria border, Sirnak city, and Hakkari Province. Tourist hotspots like Antalya, Bodrum, and Istanbul are generally safe, but caution is still advised.

Turkey has strict customs rules, with prohibited items including controlled drugs, firearms, offensive weapons, endangered animals, and indecent material. Restrictions also apply to items like tobacco, alcohol, cosmetics, and certain foodstuffs. Travelers are advised to check the limits on these items before bringing them into or out of Turkey.

According to the Turkish Ministry of Trade website, tourists are limited to carrying specific quantities of items like cigarettes, alcohol, perfumes, and food products. Failure to declare prohibited items or those subject to tax or duty can result in penalties.

In addition to customs rules, there are restrictions on taking Turkish currency out of the country, with passengers carrying more than $5,000 worth of Turkish currency subject to scrutiny. British citizens can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business, but those planning to stay longer must obtain a short-term residence permit.

For travelers planning their next trip to Turkey, Travel Republic is offering deals on package holidays with significant discounts. Additionally, luxury suitcase brand Antler has reduced prices on select cabin bags approved by Jet2 and TUI, providing travelers with stylish and practical luggage options for their journey.
