Brig.-Gen. (res.) Amal Asad, a prominent figure in the Druze community, has made a bold statement by calling on Economy Minister Nir Barkat not to attend the Druze Remembrance Day ceremony in Usfiya. Asad, who has an impressive military background, including serving in key positions during the Yom Kippur War, expressed his strong opposition to Barkat’s presence at the ceremony.
In a message directed at Barkat, Asad emphasized that the government, including Barkat, is responsible for the current state of affairs in the country. He accused the government of neglecting the needs of the Druze community and failing to address critical issues such as the situation in Gaza and the treatment of hostages.
Asad’s message was clear and direct, urging Barkat to spare the Druze community from further insults and to refrain from attending the ceremony. He highlighted the government’s role in enacting laws that have marginalized the Druze community and called for unity among the community members.
This strong stance by Asad reflects the growing discontent within the Druze community towards the government’s policies and actions. Last year, members of the community prevented another government official from attending the ceremony, signaling a deep-seated frustration with the government’s treatment of the Druze community.
The Druze Remembrance Day ceremony holds significant importance for the community, as it honors fallen soldiers and serves as a memorial site for all those who have sacrificed their lives. The spiritual leader of the Druze community, Sheikh Muwafaq Tarif, participates in the ceremony every year, underscoring the community’s commitment to honoring their heroes.
