Former Deputy Speaker Ihedioha Resigns from PDP in Nigeria

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, has made a bold move by resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to carry out internal reforms and provide credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ihedioha’s decision to leave the party comes shortly after the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where decisions were to be made regarding members accused of anti-party activities during the 2023 elections.

In a letter addressed to the chairman of PDP in his Mbutu Ward of Aboh Mbaise local government area in Imo State, Ihedioha expressed his disappointment with the party’s recent direction. He also copied the chairman of PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), PDP acting national chairman, and chairman of PDP in Imo State.

In the letter dated April 23, 2024, titled “Resignation From The Peoples Democratic Party,” Ihedioha highlighted his long-standing commitment to the party since its inception in 1998. However, he lamented that the party had strayed from its founding principles of internal reforms and credible leadership.

Despite the difficulty of his decision, Ihedioha stated that he believes resigning from the PDP is the right choice. He emphasized his continued dedication to promoting democracy and good governance in Nigeria, even outside of the party.

Ihedioha’s resignation marks a significant development in the political landscape, raising questions about the future of the PDP and the opposition to the APC. As a former governor and deputy Speaker, his departure could have ripple effects on the party and its members.
