Former Florida Sheriff’s Deputy Now Spreading Disinformation from Russia

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former deputy sheriff in Palm Beach County, John Mark Dougan, has transformed from a local troublemaker to a key player in Russia’s disinformation campaign against the West. After fleeing to Moscow in 2016, Dougan has built an extensive network of fake news websites that spread false narratives and propaganda, reaching millions of people in multiple languages.

Operating from an apartment filled with servers and computer equipment, Dougan has created over 160 fake websites that mimic legitimate news outlets in the US, UK, and France. Using artificial intelligence tools, he generates thousands of articles, mixing real news events with fabricated stories attributed to Russian intelligence agencies.

His sites have been cited in news articles and social media posts nearly 8,000 times, reaching over 37 million people. The content includes baseless claims like Ukraine’s president smuggling cocaine and the CIA undermining Donald Trump’s campaign.

Despite denying involvement in operating the sites, evidence points to Dougan’s hand in their creation. His activities have drawn the attention of American and European authorities, with concerns about interference in upcoming elections.

As Dougan continues to expand his network and influence, experts warn of the potential impact on democratic systems and the spread of misinformation. With the upcoming US presidential election, his sites are already publishing divisive content aimed at stoking partisan tensions. The evolution of Dougan from a disgraced law enforcement officer to a purveyor of Russian propaganda highlights the growing threat of online disinformation campaigns.
