Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan announces support for Biden in November election

Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan made headlines on Monday when he announced he would be voting for President Joe Biden in the upcoming November election. In an opinion piece published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan explained his decision, citing Trump’s conduct and character as disqualifying factors.

Duncan, a lifelong GOP member, expressed his concerns about Trump’s lack of moral compass and criminal behavior, stating that he could not in good conscience support the former president for a second term. He emphasized the need for the Republican Party to move on from the Trump era in order to rebuild and progress.

The former Lt. Gov. criticized fellow Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, for aligning themselves with Trump. He also called out former Attorney General Bill Barr for choosing to support Trump over Biden in the election, despite witnessing firsthand the damage caused by the former president.

Duncan’s decision to support Biden comes after his involvement in pushing back against Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. He testified in front of a grand jury that later indicted Trump for his actions in the state.

In 2021, Duncan announced he would not seek reelection in 2022, opting instead to focus on reforming the GOP. His stance against Trump and support for Biden highlight the growing divide within the Republican Party and the ongoing struggle to move past the Trump era.
