Former interpreter for Ohtani ordered to undergo gambling addiction treatment by judge in sports betting case

LOS ANGELES – A federal judge has ordered the former longtime interpreter for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani to be released on $25,000 bond and undergo gambling addiction treatment. Ippei Mizuhara allegedly exploited his personal and professional relationship with Ohtani to steal $16 million from the player’s bank account over the years.

Mizuhara, who appeared in court wearing a dark suit and white collared shirt, was shackled at the ankles but not handcuffed. The judge approved his attorney’s request to remove the shackles during the hearing. Mizuhara faces one count of bank fraud and could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

The courtroom was packed with press, including Japanese media, as the judge outlined the bond conditions, which include a prohibition on gambling and contact with any victims or witnesses in the case. Mizuhara must also submit to drug testing, surrender his passport, and remain within the Central District of California’s jurisdiction.

Prosecutors stated that there is no evidence that Ohtani was involved in or aware of Mizuhara’s gambling activities. Ohtani is said to be cooperating with investigators. Mizuhara’s winning bets totaled over $142 million, but his losing bets amounted to $183 million, resulting in a net loss of nearly $41 million.

Major League Baseball has launched its own investigation into the matter, and the Dodgers have already terminated Mizuhara’s employment. The case is scheduled to be arraigned on May 9, and Mizuhara has already expressed his intention to undergo gambling addiction treatment.
