Former journalism student discusses how she transformed her love for sports into a successful career

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Reynolds School of Journalism alumna Gianna Hearn took an unexpected turn in her career path that led her to become a successful sports reporter and live producer for the NBA G League Ignite. Hearn, who graduated in 2013 with a focus on broadcasting and public relations, initially struggled to find her true calling after a knee injury derailed her dreams of pursuing athletics.

Despite the setback, Hearn found her passion for sports reporting while studying at the Reynolds School. She took a variety of journalism classes and honed her skills in video production, eventually landing internships and jobs at local news stations where she gained valuable experience in photography and video.

Hearn’s dedication and hard work paid off when she was hired as a halftime host for PAC 12 in San Francisco. However, a knee surgery forced her to take a two-year hiatus from working in sports, during which she faced the challenge of staying relevant in a competitive industry.

Fortunately, Hearn’s connections in the NBA G League led to a new opportunity as the League’s social media manager. Today, she serves as a live producer and host for NBA G League Ignite in Las Vegas, showcasing her talents as the face of the G League and sideline reporter for NBA TV.

Hearn’s inspiring journey serves as a testament to perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. As the Reynolds School introduces a new sports media emphasis in fall 2024, students like Hearn will have the opportunity to follow in her footsteps and pursue their passion for sports journalism.
