Former Michigan tennis player Kara Hall Wangler had a unique opportunity to showcase her skills on the big screen as the body double for Zendaya in the recently released movie “Challengers.” The film, which follows the story of a tennis player turned coach, required intense tennis choreography, and Wangler’s background in the sport made her the perfect fit for the role.
Wangler, who had captained the Michigan women’s tennis team in 2018, was approached by the movie team two years ago to audition for the role. Despite initially thinking it was spam, Wangler’s resemblance to Zendaya and her tennis prowess landed her the role of “Tashi Tennis Double.”
Making multiple trips to Boston for filming, Wangler seamlessly stepped into the role, practicing tennis patterns and working closely with Zendaya to perfect the on-screen tennis sequences. Zendaya praised Wangler’s dedication and skill, mirroring her movements to create a seamless performance.
Wangler’s aggressive style of play and natural tennis instincts impressed the movie team, solidifying her role as the body double. Despite the glamour of movie stardom, Wangler remains grounded, gaining a newfound respect for the discipline of acting.
Attending the movie premiere in Los Angeles with her husband, Wangler experienced a surreal moment seeing her name in the credits and rubbing shoulders with tennis icon Venus Williams. Reflecting on the experience, Wangler expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the hard work that went into bringing the film to life.
For Wangler, the journey from the tennis courts of Michigan to the movie set of “Challengers” was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that she will always cherish.
