The American Athletic Conference (AAC) has set its sights on Tim Pernetti, a seasoned college sports executive, as its next commissioner. Pernetti will be taking over from Mike Aresco, who played a pivotal role in transforming the league from the former Big East to the AAC.

With a background in both college athletics and sports business, Pernetti brings a wealth of experience to the table. He has previously worked for IMG, a leading sports marketing and branding firm, where he held various roles including president of IMG College and leader of IMG Academy in Florida.

Notably, Pernetti also served as the athletic director at Rutgers, his alma mater, where he brokered the deal to bring the university into the Big Ten Conference. However, his tenure at Rutgers was marred by a scandal involving player abuse by the men’s basketball coach, which ultimately led to his resignation.

As Pernetti steps into the role of AAC commissioner, he faces a pivotal moment in college athletics. The conference is set to expand with the addition of six new teams for the 2023 season and welcomes Army as a new football member. Additionally, the 2024 season will mark the debut of the expanded College Football Playoff, offering the top Group of Five champion a spot in the field.

In his new position, Pernetti will also have a seat on the CFP Management Committee, alongside other FBS commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director. With significant changes on the horizon for college football, Pernetti’s leadership will be crucial in guiding the AAC through this transformative period.
