Doug Kimmelman and his late wife, Carol “Lulu” Kimmelman, shared a love for tennis that blossomed into a lifelong passion for education. After Lulu’s passing in 2017, Doug and his children embarked on a mission to honor her legacy by creating a community center that combined both of her passions. This dream is now becoming a reality with the groundbreaking of “Lulu’s Place” in Playa Del Rey.

The $150-million center will feature tennis and pickleball courts, soccer fields, basketball and volleyball courts, a dog park, and more, all aimed at providing recreational opportunities for the youth of Los Angeles. The project, set to be completed by 2026, has been in the works for seven years, facing challenges such as finding suitable land in the city.

With support from donors like Disney, Tiger Woods’ TGR Foundation, and Clippers president Steve Ballmer’s Ballmer Group, the project has gained momentum. Mayor Karen Bass and other prominent figures have expressed their pride in being part of this initiative to honor Lulu’s memory and provide valuable resources to the community.

While some concerns have been raised about the potential impact on nearby residential areas, advocates like Los Angeles Unified School District board member Nick Melvoin emphasize the importance of providing accessible sports facilities and educational programs to thousands of students in the area. Ultimately, “Lulu’s Place” is a testament to Doug Kimmelman’s dedication to honoring his late wife’s values and ensuring her legacy lives on for generations to come.
