Fort Detrick Welcomes World Trade Center Beam as Steel Legacy

A 2500 lbs. piece of 9/11 World Trade Center steel found a new home at the Fort Detrick Installation in Maryland after a dignified transfer from New York City. The transfer was conducted by a joint contingent of U.S. Army Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilian Federal Firefighters, and Fire Department City of New York Firefighters.

Led by the Garrison Command Team of Col. Ned Marsh and Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Dills, members of the United States Army Garrison Fort Detrick traveled to the FDNY Training Academy “The Rock” on Randall’s Island, New York City. They toured the Academy with FDNY Chief of Training Thomas Currao before loading the steel and concrete for transport to Maryland.

Fort Detrick plans to dedicate the steel on September 11, 2024, displaying it in the auditorium atrium of the Soldier Center for all members of the Installation community to experience. The transfer process was facilitated by retired FDNY Firefighter Carl Sheetz, emphasizing the importance of a physical and emotional connection to the events of 9/11.

After completing the transfer, Garrison members traveled to the WTC site in lower Manhattan to briefly return the steel to where it once stood as part of the Twin Towers. The teams also visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, fostering camaraderie and mutual respect between the FDNY and USAG Fort Detrick. Col. Marsh highlighted the shared pride in service and the fundamental importance of remembering the sacrifices made on and after 9/11.
