Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood are monitoring Miami Beach’s spring break crowds

As spring breakers flock to South Florida, Fort Lauderdale officials are gearing up to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. With Miami Beach implementing strict policies this year, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis emphasized that while there are rules in place, the goal is for everyone to have fun.

“We want you to have a great time, but we also want to ensure safety,” Trantalis said at a press conference on Friday. “Our police will be present every day to assist and make sure everyone follows the rules.”

Police Chief Bill Schultz added that there will be an increased police presence, with some officers working undercover to maintain order. The Bar Watch program is also in effect to educate staff on spotting suspicious behavior and testing potentially spiked beverages.

In a new initiative, the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department is partnering with the South Florida Opioid Alliance to provide Narcan in hotels and to lifeguards in case of opioid overdoses. Fire Chief Stephen Gollan stressed the importance of quick intervention to reverse the effects of an overdose.

As the city prepares for the influx of visitors, the City Commission is set to vote on parking rate increases near the beach to manage crowds. Trantalis encouraged visitors to use ride-share services or the free LauderGO shuttle to alleviate parking congestion.

Meanwhile, neighboring Hollywood is taking a more conservative approach to spring break, focusing on monitoring crowds and conditions on the beach before considering any parking rate adjustments. City spokeswoman Joann Hussey emphasized that Hollywood attracts a different crowd and wants to ensure a welcoming environment for families and retirees.
