Founders Fund takes the lead in funding composites startup Layup Parts

Layup Parts, a hard tech startup founded just five months ago, has secured a significant $9 million round of financing led by Founders Fund, with Lux Capital and Haystack also participating. The rapid pace at which Layup was able to secure this funding is a clear indication of investors’ growing interest in tech-focused solutions for the challenges faced by the American industrial base.

The founders of Layup, Zack Eakin, Hanno Kappen, and Elisa Suarez, bring deep experience in the manufacturing industry, having previously worked at companies like The Boring Company, Stellar Pizza, Rivian, and Anduril. Eakin, the CEO of Layup, highlighted the lack of innovation in composite parts manufacturing compared to other areas of manufacturing, such as CNC-machining and injection molding.

Layup aims to revolutionize the composite parts manufacturing process by significantly reducing lead times and costs for customers. Eakin envisions returning small parts in three days and larger components in two weeks, at a fraction of the current cost. The company plans to have a factory operational by the end of the third quarter of this year, with the new funding going towards capital expenditures and hiring for both software development and factory operations.

Eakin’s motivation for founding Layup goes beyond just fixing supply chain issues; he is driven by the desire to empower engineering students and make composite parts more accessible to all. By focusing on innovation in software tools and streamlining the manufacturing process, Layup aims to bring about a much-needed transformation in the composites industry.
