France and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) agree to collaborate on artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives

Reading Time: 2 minutes

France and the United Arab Emirates have taken a significant step towards enhancing their cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with the signing of a “strategic partnership” agreement. The agreement, signed by French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and Khaldoon Al Mubarak, managing director of the Abu Dhabi government-controlled fund Mubadala, aims to open up new avenues of economic collaboration in the rapidly growing AI sector.

During his visit to the Gulf state, Le Maire emphasized France’s commitment to becoming a leader in AI in Europe and highlighted the importance of forging partnerships to achieve this goal. The agreement paves the way for cooperation in four key areas, including research, skill development, investment in data centers, and the semiconductor industry.

One of the highlights of the agreement is the collaboration between the Abu Dhabi branch of the Sorbonne, Paris’s main university, and the UAE in research and skill development in AI. This partnership will not only benefit both countries but also contribute to the advancement of AI technology on a global scale.

The UAE, known for its ambitious vision and forward-thinking approach, has set its sights on becoming a global leader in AI over the next decade. With the appointment of a minister of state for artificial intelligence, digital economy, and remote work in 2017, the country has demonstrated its commitment to harnessing the potential of AI for economic growth and innovation.

In line with its vision, the UAE has attracted significant investments in the AI sector, including a $1.5 billion investment by US tech giant Microsoft in UAE-based AI firm G42. Despite facing allegations of maintaining ties with blacklisted Chinese companies, G42 has denied these claims and continues to play a key role in driving AI innovation in the region.

The AI agreement between France and the UAE comes on the heels of growing economic ties between the two countries. In 2021, the UAE signed a landmark deal for 80 French-made Rafale fighter jets, solidifying their defense partnership. Additionally, France has a permanent military base in Abu Dhabi, further strengthening their strategic relationship.

Looking ahead, Le Maire expressed openness to the possibility of UAE investment in France’s nuclear power infrastructure, citing it as a symbol of the strong trust between the two nations. As both countries continue to deepen their economic and technological cooperation, the AI partnership is poised to drive innovation, create new opportunities, and strengthen the bond between France and the UAE in the dynamic field of artificial intelligence.
