France’s President Emmanuel Macron warns EU nations of the potential demise of Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a powerful speech at the Sorbonne University in Paris, calling for stronger European defences and asserting the continent’s independence from the United States. Macron, 46, emphasized the need for Europe to not become a vassal of the US and to take a more assertive role on the global stage.

With just three years left in his final term and facing criticism after losing his parliamentary majority, Macron outlined his vision for a more united and proactive European Union. He warned of the risks facing Europe, including military, economic, and geopolitical pressures that could weaken the 27-nation bloc.

Macron highlighted the importance of boosting Europe’s cybersecurity capacity, strengthening defence ties with post-Brexit Britain, and investing in a European academy to train high-ranking military personnel. He stressed the need for a European defence industry and urged Europeans to prioritize buying European military equipment.

The French leader also addressed economic challenges, calling for Europe to become a global leader in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, space, biotechnologies, and renewable energy. Macron proposed exemptions to competition rules to support firms in key sectors and advocated for less fragmented markets in energy, telecoms, and financial services.

Macron’s speech, seen as France’s contribution to the EU’s strategic agenda, comes at a crucial time as EU leaders prepare to decide on the bloc’s future direction after the European elections. Despite facing challenges to his popularity and influence, Macron remains committed to shaping a stronger and more independent Europe on the world stage.
